3 Bible Tips: The Fruit of Meekness and Gentleness
The Greek word for this fruit is translated "meekness" in the King James Version and "gentleness" in the New King James Version, so we can consider them as synonyms. Meekness should not be confused with weakness. It is carefully controlled strength. The word Paul chose was commonly used to refer to well-trained animals, like elephants and horses.
1. Meekness is one of the "beatitudes"—the beautiful attitudes.
Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5).
2. Jesus Christ had supernatural power, but He was approachable, sympathetic, kind and loving.
Jesus said, "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly [humble] in heart" (Matthew 11:29, emphasis added).
3. Avoid overreacting to people. Be gentle with everyone.
"Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do" (Colossians 3:12-13).
