3 Bible Tips: The Abomination of Desolation
1. Jesus Christ warned about an abomination of desolation in the holy place just before His return.
"'Therefore when you see the "abomination of desolation," spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place' (whoever reads, let him understand), 'then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains'" (Matthew 24:15-16).
2. About 200 years earlier, Antiochus Epiphanes had placed a statue of Zeus in the temple, a forerunner of the abomination of desolation Christ talked about.
"And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation" (Daniel 11:31; "the abomination of desolation" is called "The Awful Horror" in the Good News Bible and "the detestable thing" in the Jewish Publication Society version; see the apocryphal book of 1 Maccabees 1:41-63 for the historical fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy).
3. In the end time within the "temple of God" there will be an actual person claiming to be God in the flesh.
"Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God" (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4).
